Social media is a great way to keep in touch with others, stay up-to-date news and trends, and to let others know what you are up to. The power of social media is massive, as social media platforms have the ability to make content and communication global.

While the benefits of social media are undoubtedly numerous, there is no denying the negative effects it can have it people’s lives. Mental health researchers have evidence that those who use it heavily can notice decreases in their moods or start to focus too much on how their lives compare to those of the people they follow online. In response to this, Facebook will soon let Facebook and Instagram users monitor their daily usage on the two apps.

Facebook needs a better public image

These new changes coming to Facebook’s two social media platforms come in the midst of a number of bad news for California-based tech giant. Facebook recently announced that its growth has slowed down, leading to a massive drop in the company’s stock value. Ethical questions surrounding false news, questionable political accounts, and privacy concerns for the average user have resulted in many ditching the platform, altogether. While these upcoming features will surely help Facebook users take better control of their usage, it will be interesting to observe what impact the features will have on the struggling company’s growth, despite the millions of users it currently has.

Although Facebook currently is not doing too well, Instagram has been steadily ahead of Snapchat and other photo-based platforms. Instagram is dominating and fortunately is not struggling to remain relevant.

Should other companies follow suit?

Social media is very popular amongst many demographics. Many people depend on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat to get their news and stay connected to the ones they care about. With these services playing such a big role in society, should other tech companies follow Facebook and make it easier for their userbase to limit the time they spend online? This might not be the wisest short-term business decision, but promoting healthier internet usage could change how we approach these apps long-term. As the developers of these big platforms, tech companies hoping to establish loyal userbases should make conscious efforts to promote healthy habits.
